Lefty Gunplay & JasonMartin Sample Chicano Classic on Heavens Above (My Angel)

Emerging LA rapper, Lefty Gunplay just dropped another banger for the streets, Heavens Above (My Angel). In collaboration with JasonMartin (fka Problem) and Mike & Keys (credit: Nipsey Hussle, Kendrick Lamar), the single is dedicated to true love. While Lefty has the weight of the world on his shoulders, his ride or die holds him down with loyalty, love, and affection. Lines like, “pussy whipped so good I’m gonna f’n listen” lets everyone know what type of time he’s on.

Heavens Above samples Amanda Perez’s 2002 single, which is a #IYKYK type of situation when living in LA. Lefty originally had the idea of sampling “Angel” before sharing it with JasonMartin, who then tapped Grammy-nominated duo Mike & Keys to bring the song’s vision to life — a modern twist on a Chicano cult classic.

The introspective and reflective single highlights Lefty’s evolution, as he has grown into refined production choices and more introspective lyricism, alongside his gift of seamlessly merging classic sounds with contemporary vibes.

If you’ve been living in your head lately — let us catch you up to speed on Lefty Gunplay. Hailing from Baldwin Park, CA, Lefty Gunplay embodies the essence of his city’s urban poetry. His music echoes the struggles and triumphs of Baldwin Park, making him a relatable voice for those who know the struggle.

Growing up in a trailer park with his mom and grandmother, Lefty Gunplay found peace in Hip Hop, as he grew up listening to The Game, Ice Cube, and 50 Cent. Following being incarcerated after taking a sharp turn to the streets, Lefty regained his freedom 9 years later and never looked back.

2023 found Lefty making a name for himself by dropping YouTube freestyles, before being discovered by OTR Records, a label known for its commitment to their artist’s development and success.

Since that, it’s been nothing but up for Lefty Gunplay. Aside from collaborating with industry titans like Too $hort and Ty Dolla $ign, Lefty’s feature on Kendrick Lamar’s ‘tv off”, hit #1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart and skyrocketed him to the next level.

If that wasn’t enough, Lefty’s just announced his Can’t Get Right Tour that kicks off in Salt Lake City on April 15th, with a final stop in San Diego on April 27th.

Heavens Above (My Angel) is a testament to Lefty Gunplay’s progression and thoughtful dedication to his craft. With Lefty’s tour on the way, new music dropping, and unwavering commitment to success, things are definitely about to get crazy….
