Nappi Devi On "NAMASTE"'s Significance In His Life

Namaste, sometimes spoken as namaskar and namaskaram, is a customary, non-contact form of Hindu greeting. In the contemporary era, it is found on the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and among the Indian diaspora worldwide. The gesture is widely used in the parts of Southeast Asia where Indian religions are strong.

For rapper/singer and songwriter Nappi Devi, "Namaste", the title of his latest single, is mainly about growth. Catch up with the Detroit native in his first Hype Off Life interview where he gets into growth, finding peace through music and 2020 Hip Hop. Right now and only on Hype Off Life 👊🏾

What does the word "Namaste" mean to you regarding the song?

Namaste is mainly about my growth. Its about all the stress and anxiety I over came to get where I am today. But the title is a sign of peace and tranquility. Basically trying to forget those dark moments to move into a brighter future.

Whats the difference between Nappi Devi as an artist, now vs. 2 years ago?

Nappi Devi now is a force to be reckoned with. Musically, I've been hella productive, steady working hard to get ahead. I'm in a more comfortable passion as an artist, even in my personal life!

What was the catalyst or reason you got started in music?

Being a sad lonely kid, made me reach out to poetry for clarity. Now here I am making songs.

Who are some of your influences and inspirations? Musically, professionally and personally.

Michael Jackson, Eminem, Andre 3000, Kendrick, Pierce the Veil, Erykah Badu, Isaiah Rashad. The list goes on for sure. I also enjoy reading in general, learning new shit helps with writing sometimes.

How do you want to be viewed as an artist?

I want to be respected as a artist and listed as one of the greats someday. That cool hipster kid who did his best and succeeded. Never gave up even when things who at its worst. Still overcame and rose victorious.

How do you feel about the status of Hip Hop music in 2020? In Detroit?

Hip Hop is changing, but not necessarily in a bad way. The new styles make room for new artist. I like where it's headed, especially knowing I'm not too far off from getting that ticket in. So it's a vibe to my ears. (Some songs and artist) Detroit is home, I feel like a lot of Industry people got their eyes on the city. It's only a matter of time before things really start poppin' off.
