HYPE FILES - The Cash Cobain Interview

New York Recording Artist/Producer Cash Cobain is the man who pioneered a big change in what we know as "New York Drill". With his style of "Sample Drill", Cobain experimented with 90s R&B, 2000s Pop, and Gospel music to breathe more life into some of your favorite songs.

As a producer, he has lent his sound to the likes of Central Cee ("Duppy Drill") and Shawny Binladen ("Yellow Tears"). As an artist, he gave us Jersey Club-tinged tracks like "Slizzy Like" with Chow Lee, collaborated with King Combs, and his "JHoliday" single is making its rounds.

With his "2 Slizzy 2 Sexy" project pumping through speakers around the world, we got a chance to speak with Cash Cobain on a few things including him being the originator of the "Sample Drill", his start in music, the biggest album of the 2000s, upcoming releases, and more!

Get familiar with the "Sample Drill" King below.

Thanks for coming through! You’re just days away from dropping “2 Slizzy 2 Sexy” Deluxe. How are you feeling about its release?

I'm feeling too slizzy right now I'm happy and excited for this release.

In what ways did putting together the album grow you as an artist?

I feel like every project I do helps me grow as an artist. I'm just learning as I go, working on my craft more and more, seeing what people react to.

What excites you most about the direction your career is headed?

I'm too excited! Everything is going how I want it to go. I see the progress going up, up, and up and I'm enjoying every moment.

As the originator of “sample drill”, which incorporates different sounds from the 90s and 2000s, what are some of your favorite songs from that time?

I'm in love with all the songs. Lol. Definitely like "My Everything", and "Weak" are my favorites.

What do you think was the greatest album to come out of the 2000s?

"Get Rich or Die Trying"

What some people might not know is, you’re equally talented as a producer and rapper. What similarities and differences have you noticed between the art forms?

I've recently been looking at vocals as an instrument. Lol. The way the flows goes into the beat, the pockets that vocals go into are like completing the beat.

How did you get your start as a musician, by the way?

I love music so much. Music is the best thing in the world man. I just always wanted to be able to create my own, so I started by making beats.

When did you know that music was something you wanted to pursue full-time?

I think I always knew, but as I got older I started to see this is the only legit way that I'm going to make it to where I wanna be. This is all I got.

What challenges did you have to overcome to get to the space you’re in now, and what did you tell yourself to keep going?

I never really faced challenges. I've had big fallouts and like real-life situations and it was a point where I had to step back for a lil bit and figure everything out. The love I have for music is uncontrollable man, I just have to make it. I just told myself that I'm on go mode now fully, all gas no breaks.

Success means different things to different people. What does it look like to you?

It looks like my mother is good, my son is good, my whole family is taken care of, my kids won't have to worry about nothing. Pretty much making sure my people are set for life.

Anything else we should know?

Y'all should know that it's slizzy take over. I'm just getting started.
