“From Grace, For Grace” - YTK (EP Review)

YTK is growing up and going up. The Baltimore native is back with his most mature work to date. YTK (real name, Kolby Kennedy) sublimely weaves potent lyrics with psychedelic production. Serving as his own producer, with help from fellow Baltimore native, Baird. The album intro is aptly named, Peyote. The lofty guitars and wavy vocals are reminiscent of a vast desert; YTK is the eagle soaring above. The project’s sonics are more experimental than the average rap track. YTK’s production is as evolving as his lyricism.

Tracks like Laylow” and “Junebug are perfect examples of what YTK does best. “Laylow” being the always welcome ‘I’m on my shit’ rap song that finds YTK coming out of his shell to remind his peers of his skills. “Junebug” is an ode to the opposite sex and the actions we partake in behind closed doors. The ‘heart’ of the project is titled, Prada. The track is a smooth ride down memory lane. The aftereffects of the breakup. YTK raps about infidelity and bruised ego. The instrumental is psychedelic and warm.

YTK switches gears with Gilligan. A groovy bassline guide YTK to reveal the troubles with keeping a relationship and maintaining his goals intact. Admitting that he’d rather give his attention to his art than his relationship. The second verse has YTK in his bag and talking to the listener like we’re a tourist; showing us the landmarks of his work.

Roulette (acoustic) is so great. I really don't have anything else to say. It’s a wonderful song that makes me wish I was on the beach. Gooseheart” ends the EP with a bang. The instrumental is subdued and muffled. This outro has YTK mumbling about being held back by a partner. Wrapping up the theme of balancing his craft with his relationships, YTK seems to make a decision. Letting go of the prospect of keeping a relationship has seemingly freed YTK and has allowed him to achieve his final form.
