REWIND: Tago Jones Releases Prophetic "Django" Inspired EP, 'Tago Unchained
As the Black Lives Matter movement has made it’s way around the world, in what CNN's Christiane Amanpour called a “global massive movement”, many artists have used Hip Hop as a vehicle for change, voicing their grievances through their art. One such artist that has always been down with the movement, even before it was a movement is multi-talented musician and philosopher Tago Jones (pronounced TAH-go).
Although his groundbreaking EP, ‘Tago Unchained’ was officially released in 2015, Jones started the writing process 2 year prior, in 2013. Prophetic and ahead of the times, ‘Tago Unchained’ is a slept on gem and attack on white supremacy. Inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained”, the 7-track project is high energy, high concept and refreshingly thoughtful. His aggressive and captivating flow carries listeners throughout the project, accompanied by beautifully integrated vocals and production, alongside provocative soundbites from Black thought leaders of the past, like Nina Simone and Richard Pryor.
Coming from a deeply rooted family, Tago Jones is no stranger to fighting the powers that be. Decades ago, under South Africa’s apartheid system, his politically active matriarchal grandfather was presented with 2 options: flee his home country or be killed. Now calling Denmark home, Tago Jones and his family continue to fight the good fight, with Tago sparking minds through his music and essays. Or as Tupac said back in ‘96, “learn how to think ahead, so I fight with my pen.”
