Razor J - 'Stepping Stones' EP
Indio, California native Razor J blends his varied musical tastes and influences on his debut EP, ‘Stepping Stones.’ Although he’s a rapper very much focused on lyricism, Razor J also claims the title of being highly proficient on the guitar and piano. He can solo, "shred,” improvise and just about everything else anyone could ask for, which translate well over to his new project. Citing influences that range from Big Pun and Eminem to Led Zeppelin and John Mayer, ‘Stepping Stones’ provides a sound as eclectic as Razor J’s interests in music. Coming with 6 tracks of carefully crafted jams, the project takes listeners for a 20 minute ride, as Razor J drops solid rhymes to the backdrop of top notch production. In addition to providing noteworthy lyricism and guitar work, ‘Stepping Stones’ was produced by Razor J himself, along with help from a few others. Whether he’s dropping heavy bars on “Need to Know,” packing party tunes on “Remember” or giving insight into his intentions over jazzy production on “Intro (Spection),” ‘Stepping Stones’ shows promise as Razor J introduces his lyrical skills to the world. According to the award winning guitarist, “This project took longer than expected, but it's just one tiny part of my future. It taught me so many things about writing, producing, mixing etc. I already have loads of new songs, and my music has evolved so much thru this process.” In an industry full of clout chasing and flattery in the form of imitation, it’s rare you come across an artist purely creating out of love for the artform. So, for Razor J to come through with ‘Stepping Stones’ at a time like this is refreshing in every sense of the word. Although this serves as Razor J’s first EP, he remains humble on his journey, knowing that the collection of songs serve as “stepping stones” to greatness. Tune in below.
