The Poetic Mind of Levina Lye

Born in one of the liveliest boroughs of New York City, The Bronx, Levina Lye has been singing since the age of three and was presented with many awards at a young age. She has covered songs by a wide array of artists to 6lack, Adele, Drake, Rihanna, The Weeknd and more, as a way to sway the world over to her own poetic songs. Her first EP, 'Pieces Of Me' has been critically acclaimed by several members of the press such as Soul Train, All Hip Hop, Swurv Radio and many more through the years.

Levina Lye is a real artist, a true musician if you will. October 2018, she released her second EP, 'More Of Me' which is taking the world by storm. On this EP she unleashed some harsh truths and personal thoughts that she felt her supporters needed to know.

Everything she does is for them and to let them know that as they grow, she grows alongside them, truly showing that she is human in every sense of the word. Get to know Levina Lye in her first Hype Off Life exclusive, where she touched on her poetic nature, growing up in The Bronx and that 1 thing she wishes everybody knew.

The Bronx is known to be one of the liveliest boroughs of New York City. What is your fondest memory of growing up there?

To be honest the strongest memories I have of living in the Bronx are my family actually being together. That was the last time I remember feeling whole, like I truly belonged somewhere. But my mom has enough love for me for everybody and she is the family member I will always need the most

How’d you get started singing at such a young age?

I was born loving music. It was super weird, as a kid, it was just all I could think about. I would be in school in class and just desperate to get home to listen to music and sing. I would even sing in school and participated in chorus for ten years. If I had a bad day it was my therapy, and it’s been my therapy my whole life.

"I wish people knew my heart. That it’s good and pure like the ocean."

Who are some artists you looked up to?

Honestly every and any artist who is authentic and writes their own music. If you can make me believe what you’re saying in your songs then I’m a fan for life. There’s so many artists who have influenced me along the way and I’m grateful for them all.

Your songs wax very poetic. What part does poetry play in your life?

I flow deep because I’m a poet - that is a line from my current single off of More of Me in “I’m a star”. I am a poetic being first and foremost. I love writing just as much as I love singing and that’s why my music is so passionate. I’m bringing to life two things that I would never be me without!

Do you consider yourself a romantic?

Me? Lol, I am human. Sometimes I’m super emotional and in tune with love and other times I’m so cold I can’t tell the season but it’s all a learning experience for me. As I get older I learn more about myself and my deepest desires.

‘Pieces Of Me’, your debut EP has been critically acclaimed and is still in rotation this day. What was your #1 goal when putting it out?

I wanted people to know I was the real deal. No gimmicks, no games just a real young woman showing the world her pain and vulnerabilities but also turning them into power. I always try to show people no matter how hard I may get knocked down I always get back up and ten times better at that.

"I flow deep because I’m a poet."

It’s follow up EP, ‘More of Me’ was also well-received. Where were you in your life when you decided to start working on it?

Some of the songs on More of Me I’ve been writing for years. The funny thing is I had to really grow and go through things to say the truths that I did on my second EP. The things I sometimes sing about at times remain constant. Sometimes the memories and the scars don’t go away and if they don’t I write it out because I know someone somewhere feels how I do too, and that carries weight.

Are you working on anything new we should keep an eye out for?

I’m always working on new things! New visuals off of More of Me coming soon and new music too because if I’m not making music then who am I?!?!

What’s that one thing you wish more people knew about you?

I wish people knew my heart. That it’s good and pure like the ocean. I wish people knew my mind, and that it knows no depths. With me the possibilities are endless. You don’t ever have to be afraid to be who you are with me, long as it’s real!
