Asad iLL is Keeping His Soul in "Get Ahead" (Video Review)

It’s been a long coming for Asad. Overcoming struggles and the pitfalls of his city, Leimert Park, Asad iLL has always maintained an awareness and adaptability not found in most people. Asad has seen and experienced more than one should for a 26-year-old and yet, he doesn’t use these experiences to play the victim. He addresses situations from a point of view of a parent or older brother telling a cautionary tale through his experiences.

Incredibly talented and very aware, Asad continues to sharpen his skill as a lyricist and artist. In this recent single, “Get Ahead”, we find Asad reflecting on his worth and what self-worth means in an industry where people trade their morals to “get ahead” or “stay afloat”. “His Soul” as he raps, is reflected in his necklace proudly showing his name.

As he’s navigating throughout the video, Asad is followed by a demonic character, constantly potting on gaining said necklace.

Demon after Asad’s Soul

Asad just wants what is owed and is not comprising. A prophet trying to profit, Asad, is in a constant state of frustration when watching the downfall of his people due to either treatment by the cops or being used by this industry leaving them more in debt than they started. The video culminates with Asad confronting the Demon. The Demon attempts to take his necklace but Asad eats it before he can get the chance; securing his stance on staying true to his word.

Asad is not only a supporter of his community but is a direct product of it. This video is just a reminder that Asad is getting better. Asad’s flow weaves up and down over the revolving door loop that equates to a merry go round. Though the track is great, Asad sounds restrained; he isn’t swimming yet, just checking the temperature. This single serves as that toe in the water, only time will tell if he’ll decide to jump in.
