Curren$y and Harry Fraud Race the Coast Guard on 'The Marina' (Album Review)

There’s this subgenre in Hip Hop that either hasn’t been recognized properly, the industry is scared to label (or shed light on) or maybe it just isn’t as tapped into as it deservingly should. I’m sure it’s all of the above. Until I come up with a more suitable name I’ll refer to it as Player Music. And as I continue to further my studies, I am almost certain Curren$y Spitta Andretti is one, - if not THE - pioneer. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Straight 8 tracks of that talk from your boy on his latest EP, 'The Marina,' where he teams up with old friend Harry Fraud. You know it’s trouble when you hear that “La Musica De Harry Fraud” tag at the beginning of a song. The chemistry between these two serve as a strong hand on the neck of these soft rappers and beatmakers. Curren$y does what he does best on 'The Marina': clowns haters, brags about how he’s pulling up, picking and choosing who he’s passing his blunts to, drops game on what to do and what not to do if you want keep your pockets full. Harry’s eerie and sample-based productions are the superlative air current for Spitta to coast to once he’s taken off. You gotta love it.

14 packs features The Kush God, another Player Music altruist, Smoke DZA… RIIIIIIIGHT! They go head to head, each murdering their respective verses (which I didn’t even have to say, but some of ya’ll be lost) then we get hit with some throwback French Montana on Modena Moves’ second verse three tracks later. If we’re being honest - which we should (nobody likes liars) - I had to recheck my phone to make sure I was still listening to the same project. Thank God I was. I fool with French still but “Mixtape French” was a different breed. The Mac with the Cheese, haha.

Street Wiz lends a helping hand on the tranquil yet gritty-enough On the Water. This joint is lowkey “Hustler’s Anthem Playlist” worthy. Ballers, go add that.

After hearing 'The Marina' I went on a mini-quest to see what I’ve missed from Spitta. I don’t know exactly what Curren$y does in his sessions (besides the obvious blunt after blunt and bringing fine women in and out) but I’ve observed something extremely interesting: he brings out the OLDER (best) version of rappers on his tracks. Nine times out of ten, this is the version of rappers I prefer, forcing me to wish some of my faves started visiting Dr. Andretti, just for old times sake. Maybe they don't want to get eaten on the feature or is Spitta's vibe that real? HMMM. The weather's perfect. 'The Marinais out.
